Hindu New Year 2025: Ugadi 2025: History and significance
The term “Ugadi” comes from the word "Yugadi," where "yug" means an era and "adi" signifies something new. In the 12th century, Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya identified Ugadi as the start of the new year, similar to how spring follows the harsh winters.
The first day of the Hindu New Year is very special for Hindus. This year, the Hindu New Year begins on 30th March 2025. If the first day of the year is auspicious, it brings happiness, prosperity, and good results throughout the year. The rewards of performing good deeds on this day last the entire year.
This is why several important religious rituals are performed on the first day of the Hindu New Year, such as havan, Ganapati-Lakshmi worship, Gudi Padwa worship, etc. To ensure that there are no obstacles in these rituals, it is essential to know the necessary materials.
Essential Puja Items For Hindu New Year
- Sun Worship - Water, Copper Vessel, Kumkum, Rice, Red Flowers, Red Sandalwood
- Ganpati-Lakshmi Puja - Flowers, Fruits, Lotus Seeds, Modak, Kheer Offering, Sindoor, Rice, Kumkum, Moli, Coin, Ganga Water, Durva (Sacred Grass)
- Havan - A coconut or dry coconut, red cloth, Bael, Neem, Peepal tree stem and bark, Gular tree bark, Palash, Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Mulethi root, Rice, Cow ghee, Cloves, Kalawa (sacred thread), a Havan Kund, dry wood, Mango wood, stem and leaves, Sandalwood. Additionally, Black sesame, Guggul, Barley, Sugar, Camphor, Lobhan (resin), Cardamom.
- Gudi Padwa - A bamboo stick, cloth, Neem and Mango leaves, a garland of red flowers, water, a Kalash (pot), and flowers.
- Maa Durga Puja, Ghatsthapana Material - On the first day of the Hindu New Year, gather Mango leaves, Peepal leaves, Banyan leaves, Gulal leaves, and Umbra leaves. If Panch Palla (five leaves) are not available, Mango leaves alone will suffice. Additionally, you will need a clay Kalash (pot), clay diyas (lamps), clean clay for barley, clean barley, Mauli (sacred thread), Roli, Akshat (unbroken rice), flowers, coin, red and white cloth, Ganga water, Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, honey, ghee, curd, and sugar), honey, attar (fragrant oil), ghee, jaggery, incense sticks, camphor, Naivedya (food offerings), and a clay or brass diya for an eternal flame. You will also need a coconut and cotton wicks for lighting the lamps.
- Daan Samagri - In the year 2025, King Surya Dev reigns. Therefore, donations of red-colored items such as lentils (masoor dal), red chili, red cloth, jaggery, peanuts, honey, etc., are considered auspicious
