BEE advises States for aggressive implementation of energy efficiency measures to reach the Country’s energy saving target of 150 million ton of oil equivalent (mtoe).

  • BEE committed to improve energy efficiency in the country which contributes to low emissions and high economic growth
  • Energy efficiency will help all states in achieving energy security, create opportunities to expand economies
  • States to focus on state energy efficiency action plan and accelerate the implementation and promotion of energy conservation and efficiency projects
  • Sustained efforts and an integrated approach from all states are crucial to transform india as one of the leading countries in the world for energy efficiency--- DG BEE Abhay Bakre
  • BEE advised all SDAs to undertake implementation of pilot projects       on fast track mode
  • Ministry of power, GoI insists on raising wider public awareness about the impact of energy efficiency and ill effects of climate change- DG BEE
  • SDAs to devise plans to tap the huge energy savings investment potential of Rs.10 lakh crore by 2031 in key sectors
  • AP saved around 1.204 million ton of oil equivalent energy through implementation of the Perform, Achieve and Trade Scheme in Industries
  • State has identified 30 energy efficiency financing projects which is the highest number among the other State

Union Ministry of Power led Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has set a target for all the States to save 150 million tonne of oil equivalent (MTOE) by 2030 through accelerating energy efficiency programmes and for aggressive implementation by all the States to achieve comprehensive development by reducing emissions intensity on the Nation's economy. This is in order to meet the National energy efficiency goals and address climate change in particular.

During a virtual meeting to convey New Year wishes, BEE Director General Abhay Bakre wished all of the State Designated Agencies (SDAs) the best of luck in the coming year and reaffirmed the agency's commitment to improving energy efficiency across the country, which helps reduce emissions and boost economic growth.

All countries can benefit from increased energy efficiency because it will aid their efforts to achieve energy independence, open up new avenues for economic growth and job creation, lower their energy bills, and lessen their impact on the environment by decreasing their consumption of fossil fuels and emissions of greenhouse gases.

His message to the states was to go all out with energy efficiency programmes on turbo speed to meet individual state energy savings goals, which would in turn help meet its national goal.

The DG said that the Union Power Minister R K Singh and Secretary Power, GoI Alok Kumar insisted on raising wider public awareness about the impact of energy efficiency and ill effects of climate change with the support of state governments, as well as implementing energy efficiency programmes that contribute to addressing climate change by 50 per cent. He asked all SDAs to devise plans to tap the huge energy savings investment potential of around Rs.10 lakh crore by 2031 in key sectors including industrial, commercial, domestic, transport, municipal and agricultural sectors in the country.

Based on the report of energy savings achieved till date and energy consumption pattern in various sectors, the BEE has fixed state energy saving targets for all the States..

He said that sustained efforts and an integrated approach from all states are crucial to transform India as one of the leading countries in the world for energy efficiency which is one of the most effective approaches to ensure future energy security and meet future energy demand "DG BEE said. He advised all SDAs to undertake implementation of pilot projects on fast track mode. These may include projects on electric cooking especially for establishments such as canteens of hospitals, tourism department, anganwadi, school/college hostels, Govt. departments, etc., where round-the-clock cooking is being carried out including solar projects for replacement of diesel/fossil fuel.

He suggested SDAs for submission of energy efficiency proposals to BEE duly engaging technical and research institutes and come up with projects catering to the needs of all economic sectors. Pilot projects involving energy efficiency improvements in different utilities viz. pumps, furnaces, motors, etc. in industries /other establishments may also be undertaken and SDAs may also explore possibilities of carrying out demonstration projects in the cold chain sector including pack houses, DG said .

The DG thanked all the State Designated Agencies (SDAs) for assisting BEE in promoting and implementing BEE schemes such as Energy Conservation Building Code(ECBC), Standards and Labelling, Perform, Achieve & Trade(PAT) and demonstration projects etc. successfully that helped in achieving huge energy savings.“For instance,  the joint efforts of all states over the past few years have generated real results of a massive Rs.40,945 crores in energy savings through the Perform, Achieve, and Trade (PAT) Scheme alone. The Quantum of the saving from PAT cycle II is contextualized to highlight that it is more than the total primary energy supply of a country like Sri Lanka”, DG said..

BEE's goal of saving 150 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) by 2030 and India's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 can be met more quickly by sensitising consumers, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, industry, municipal, and buildings, to energy conservation and the adoption of energy efficiency measures., he said. He also directed all SDAs to develop a special strategy and action plan to raise public awareness about the significance of energy efficiency measures. Deputy Director General of BEE, Ashok Kumar, Secretary BEE, R K Rai, Directors of BEE, Milind Deore, Saurabh diddi, Sunil Khandare, Arijitsengupta, Vineeta Kanwal, Sameer pandita, P Samal, S K Verma and other senior officials of BEE have participated in the meeting.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has set a target of 6.68 mtoe energy savings to Andhra Pradesh and suggested AP State Designated Agency(SDA) i.e AP State Energy Conservation Mission to chalk out sector wise action plan to achieve the target.

The officials of AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), the State Designated Agency of Andhra Pradesh explained DG BEE that the State government is continuously focusing on both implementation and awareness of energy conservation and energy efficiency programs for reduction of carbon emissions which is the prime objective of energy efficiency. The State has reduced around 1.204 million tonnes of oil equivalent energy through implementation of the Perform, Achieve and Trade Scheme in Industries so far.  The Facilitation centre of BEE has identified 30 energy efficiency financing projects which is the highest number among the other States with estimated project cost of around Rs.412.30 crore.
