Andhra Pradesh government has officially declared that May 28, birth anniversary of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), the legendary actor and former chief minister of united AP, will be commemorated as a state function. In a government order issued on Tuesday, chief secretary K. Vijayanand said treating NTR Jayanti as a state celebration recognises the "extraordinary life and legacy" of the Telugu icon who passed away in 1996

The government order describes NTR as an "undisputed icon of Telugu pride", whose contributions transcended both cinema and politics. "N.T. Rama Rao's visionary leadership, artistic genius and unwavering devotion to the Telugu cause have left an indelible imprint on Andhra Pradesh," the GO states, emphasising NTR’s role in elevating Telugu identity and imbuing it with public pride. The order emphasises that NTR has inspired generations to view Telugu language and culture "not merely as heritage but as the very foundation of Telugu people's collective destiny." All departments of the state secretariat, heads of departments and district collectors have been directed to take necessary action to celebrate NTR Jayanti as a state function.
