Who is Lord Kalabhairav?
In Hindu scriptures, Lord Kalabhairav is revered as the Lord of Time and Death. The word Bhairava comes from the Sanskrit root meaning “the one who destroys fear.” He is known as the protector of devotees and the guardian of temples, ensuring safety from evil forces and negativity.
In the Tantric tradition, Bhairava holds a supreme place in spiritual practice. His worship is believed to eliminate fear, remove sins, and bless the devotee with strength, courage, and spiritual progress. Those who sincerely worship Lord Kalabhairav are said to become fearless, free from illusions, and blessed with inner peace and clarity
Kalabhairav Jayanti: Significance
Bhairava Jayanti or Kalabhairav Ashtami celebrates the powerful incarnation of Lord Shiva who appeared to destroy arrogance and restore righteousness. As per the Shiva Rahasya, Lord Bhairava manifested to uphold dharma and protect devotees from destructive forces.
On this day, devotees pray for protection, success, and liberation from fear. Worshipping Lord Kalabhairav is also believed to bring control over one’s mind and time, helping individuals use their energy more wisely.
In many temples, especially in Kashi (Varanasi) and Ujjain, grand Kalabhairav Jayanti celebrations take place with special aartis, night-long bhajans, and offerings of oil lamps and black dogs (considered sacred to Lord Bhairava).
Kalabhairav Jayanti Vrat and Puja Vidhi
As mentioned in Vrat Parichay and Shiva Rahasya, devotees observe a strict fast on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in Margashirsha. The day is dedicated entirely to the ritual worship of Lord Bhairava, performed in each Prahara (part of the day).
During the Kalabhairav Puja, devotees offer three Arghya (holy offerings) to the Lord while chanting special mantras.
First Arghya Mantra
भैरवार्घ्यं गृहाणेश भीमरूपाव्ययानघ।
अनेनार्घ्यप्रदानेन तुष्टो भव शिवप्रिय॥
Bhairavarghyam Grihanesha Bhimarupavyayanagha,
Anenarghyapradanena Tushto Bhava Shivapriya.
Second Arghya Mantra
सहस्राक्षिशिरोबाहो सहस्रचरणाजर।
गृहाणार्घ्यं भैरवेदं सपुष्पं परमेश्वर॥
Sahasrakshishirobaho Sahasracharanajara,
Grihanarghyam Bhairavedam Sapushpam Parameshvara.
Third Arghya Mantra
पुष्पांजलिं गृहाणेश वरदो भव भैरव।
पुनरर्घ्यं ग्रहणेदं सपुष्पं यातनापह॥
Pushpanjalim Grihanesha Varado Bhava Bhairava,
Punararghyam Grahanedam Sapushpam Yatanapaha.
After completing these offerings, devotees remain awake throughout the night (Bhairav Jagarana) and recite or listen to stories from the Shiva Purana and Shiva Rahasya. By performing this Kalabhairav Jayanti Vrat with faith, one is said to gain spiritual strength, overcome fear, and be freed from all sins.
Celebrations and Offerings
Temples dedicated to Lord Bhairava are decorated with oil lamps and flowers. Devotees offer black sesame oil, mustard oil, and black cloth, along with dogs and crows being fed as sacred acts of service.
In Varanasi’s Kalabhairav Temple, a special Bhairav Aarti is performed, and devotees seek blessings for protection and peace. The festival also reminds devotees of the importance of humility and discipline in spiritual life.
Kalabhairav Jayanti 2025 is a deeply spiritual occasion that celebrates the divine energy of Lord Shiva’s fierce form – Lord Kalabhairav. It reminds devotees to conquer fear, respect time, and walk the path of righteousness. Observing the fast with devotion and faith is believed to bring protection, prosperity, and liberation from karmic burdens
