The government has informed that orders for three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been placed to facilitate the construction of a 21-kilometer undersea tunnel for the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this information in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Friday while he was giving an update on Maharashtra’s infrastructure projects
The construction on the high-speed rail project is rapidly growing in Maharashtra, as 100 percent land acquisition has now been completed, the minister stated. Major works like construction of bridges and aqueducts are under process. Preliminary works which are essential for operating the TBMs like building of shafts have also started
In reply to Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut ‘s inquiries related to lesser number of funding for new railway lines in Maharashtra, potential project delays and measures taken for progress, the minister presented an overview on the ongoing infrastructure projects. Vaishnaw stated that the government with a total investment of Rs 1.64 crore is currently engaged with network expansion, redevelopment of stations and other key projects in the state
These projects consist of 41 network expansion and augmentation initiatives worth Rs 81,580 crore. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), with 178 route kilometers in Maharashtra constitutes 12 percent of its total length. About 76 kilometers stretch of New Gholvad and New Vaitarna has already been commissioned. The connectivity of the Western DFC to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is expected to strengthen cargo and container movement from the port to the Delhi NCR region.
