In a major milestone for Indian Railways, the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train has successfully reached a peak speed of 180 km/h during its recent trials. The trials, which commenced in the Kota Division of Indian Railway ( Rajasthan), have demonstrated the train’s capability to provide high-speed, long-distance travel with unmatched comfort.

Sharing a video of the trial on social media platform X, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased the train’s stability, with a glass of water placed on a flat surface inside the coach remaining static despite the train’s high speed.

The trials, conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), aim to evaluate the train’s performance under full load conditions.According to an official, on January 2, the train hit 180 km/h during a 30 km stretch between Kota and Laban in Bundi district. Similarly on January 1, it achieved similar speeds during a 40 km trial run between Rohal Khurd and Kota, along with speeds of 170 km/h and 160 km/h on other sections like Kota-Nagda and Rohal Khurd-Chau Mahla The trials will continue throughout January, followed by an evaluation by the Railway Safety Commissioner before certification and induction into regular service

"Once these trials are over, the train will be evaluated by the Railway Safety Commissioner at the maximum speed. Only after passing the final stage, Vande Bharat trains will be officially certified and handed over to Indian Railways for induction and regular service" said an official.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train boasts modern amenities such as automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design. These features aim to redefine long-distance train travel in India, providing a luxurious experience similar to the 136 Vande Bharat Express ( chair car) trains already operational on medium and short routes

"The real challenge for Railways was to add berths and test the trains for full passenger and luggage load conditions in order to convert them into Vande Bharat sleeper coaches while achieving the peak speed of 180 km/ hour. With these successful trials, rail commuters can hope for world class travel experience in long distance travel like Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Delhi to Mumbai, Howrah to Chennai and many other routes also. They will benefit as travel time will come down considerably."

"The current average speed of Mumbai Delhi long-distance travel is 90 km/hr with maximum permissible speed of 140 km/h for Tejas Rajdhani Express, which is fastest among all Rajdhani train services in India" said an official of Indian Railway.

Vande Bharat trains are now available in many Shatabdi train routes

Vande Bharat Express is India’s fastest train and capable of reaching speeds up to 180 km/h. As of now, it connects major cities at short and medium distance apart like Delhi and Varanasi and offers a luxurious travel experience.

Vande Bharat trains provide a seamless blend of speed and comfort. It’s not just a mode of transportation but an experience of modern Indian engineering.
