LIFE objective to mobilize at least one billion Indians and other global citizens to take actions for protecting and conserving the environment by 2028
With strong commitment towards conserving energy resources and preserving environment to address the ill effects of climate change, the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has welcomed the Govt. of India’s initiative of Mission LiFE (Life Style for Environment) and assured full support from State govt. to make the LIFE mission successful, which is envisioned as an India-led global mass movement that will nudge individual and collective action to protect the environment.
As the people’s lifestyle has a substantial role in climate change, the LIFE movement aims to motivate individuals and communities to practice a lifestyle that is synchronous with nature to combat climate change. LiFE movement was introduced by the Hon'ble Prime Minister at COP26 in Glasgow on 1 November 2021 for mindful and deliberate utilization, instead of mindless and destructive consumption to protect and preserve the environment.
The Mission LiFE is designed with the objective to mobilize at least one billion Indians and other global citizens to take individual and collective action for protecting and conserving the environment in the period 2022-28. Within India, at least 80 percent of all villages and urban local bodies are aimed to become environment-friendly by 2028.Mission LiFE focuses on nudging individuals towards simple behavioral changes in their daily lives which accumulate to contribute significantly towards climate action. The Mission LiFE identified 75 actions across the seven categories namely Energy Conservation, Water Conservation, Say No to Single Use Plastic, Adoption of Sustainable Food Systems, Waste Reduction, Adoption of Healthy Lifestyles, Reduction of E- Waste.
While AP Special Chief Secretary Energy K Vijayanand and Member Secretary of AP Pollution Control Board, GoAP, B Sreedhar along with AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), SDA of AP officials explained the above to Hon’ble Energy and Environment Minister Peddireddi Ramachanda Reddy on LiFE mission and its impact on environment, the minister said that climate change poses a challenge to sustainability of social and economic development, livelihoods of communities and environmental management in State. “Andhra Pradesh Government is giving utmost priority for environmental protection and has created an exclusive Climate Change Cell (CCC).The cell addresses climate change issues through Ecosystem based Approach (EbA) on par with India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change and paves the way to tackle the global challenge of climate change”, Minister said.
The minister welcomed the GoI initiative of LiFE Mission and emphasized the need for State departments for involvement of Individuals, Organizations and all stakeholders in an integrated approach for successful implementation of the LIFE mission activities for reaching its objective. He appreciated Union Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Power and Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), GoI for their efforts to penetrate LiFE and its actionable points in a large scale across the country and assured full support and deep involvement from Andhra Pradesh in making the LIFE activities successful in the State.
“LiFE mission connects all the people for the common cause of protecting the earth, and makes us understand to utilize the resources in a better way. Mission LiFE makes the fight against climate change where everyone of us can contribute within our capacities. It inspires us to do all that can be done in our everyday life to protect the environment. We all need to believe that the environment can be protected by making changes in our lifestyle." Minister said.
B Sreedhar explained that D.O letters along with Action Plan for the State for Mass Mobilization of LiFE Action up to World Environment Day, 2023 were issued to various departments that include AP Power utilities (APTRANSCO, APGENCO, APEPDCL, APCPDCL, APSPDCL, Municipal Administration & Urban Development dept, Transport dept etc. to carry out activities for effective implementation of 75 actionable points of LiFE.
The action plan from APPCB includes the activities such as Conducting of Bicycle Rallies on LiFE in all District Head Quarters/ Corporations/ ULBs by involving all the employees, NGOs, Environmental Groups etc., Conducting Special Drives on Single Use Plastics by involving Ward Sanitation & Environment Secretaries and Conducting Workshops, Seminars, Quiz Programmes on Mission LiFE themes and actions. Also programs such as special campaign at major traffic junctions on Switch Off of Vehicle engines during Red Light Signal by involving traffic police, Transport Department and Volunteers and Launching of special enforcement drives against polluting vehicles by involving Transport Department etc. were part of action plan proposed by APPCB, he said.
APSECM officials said that as per the directions of union ministry of power led Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), an action plan for creating awareness programs on LiFE mission has been submitted to BEE. APSECM plans to create awareness on energy efficiency/ energy conservation actions of LiFE Mission among school students, households, farmers, municipalities, general public and Retailers on the actionable points of LiFE energy savings theme. APSECM with support and co-ordination of AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB) and AP DISCOMs would fully focus on organizing awareness programs on relevant energy saving actionable points of LIFE mission.
The expected Impact of LiFE Mission across the Nation includes switching the car / scooter engines at traffic lights /railway crossings that can save up to 22.5 billion kWh of energy, turning off running taps when not in active use can save up to 9 trillion litres of water., using a cloth bag instead of a plastic bag while shopping can save up to 375 million tonnes of solid waste from entering the landfill, discarding non-functioning gadgets in the nearest e-recycling unit can recycle up to 0.75 million tonnes of e-waste and Composting waste food at home can save up to 15 billion tonnes of food from going to landfills.
