    • EE measures being implemented in 69 substations of Visakhapatnam zone and 102 substations of Kadapa zone – JMD APTRANSCO
    • APTRANSCO has taken transmission loss reduction measures to reduce losses under 2.8 per cent

As part of its endeavor to further accelerate energy conservation and efficiency programs in the State of Andhra Pradesh and provide its benefits to all the electricity consumers/stakeholders, the energy dept has fully focused on implementing energy efficiency programs in AP power utitlies for achieving substantial results.

As part of this, the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTRANSCO) has taken initiative in energy efficinecy front that would help reduce energy cost  for the auxiliary units at Substations through implementation of energy efficiency measures in around 158 No’s Extra High Tension(EHT) Substations in various locations of the State with the support of Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission(APSECM), State Designated Agency of AP and AP State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation(APSEEDCO).

During a virtual review meeting on infrastrucutre developments of APTRANSCO including energy effciency in particular with Special Chief Secretary Energy and CMD APTRANSCO, K Vijayanand, the Joint Managing Director of APTRANSCO & MD APGENCO K Chakradhar babu explained that major portion of energy efficinecy measures in APTRANSCO have been completed with the  replacement of the old electrcial applainces in its EHT substations with energy efficient electrical applainces such as 9W(Watts) LED bulbs, 20 W LED tube lights, high efficiency BLDC(Brushless Direct Current) fans, 70 W & 110 W Yard lights and  190 W Flood lights.

JMD said that the APTRANSCO has entered into MoU with APSECM and provided funding support for implementation of energy efficiency measures in 70 No’s EHT Sub Stations of APTRANSCO in Vijayawada zone in the circles of Guntur, Ongole, Krishna, and Nellore Circles in the State and completed installation of energy efficient applainces in all these Substations. Apart from the above, APTRANSCO in co-ordination with AP State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation has taken up energy efficiency measures in 69 No’s EHT substations in Visakhapatnam zone  and 102 No’s EHT substations in Kadapa Zone. Out of these, EE measures were implemented in 35 No’s substations in Visakhapatnam zone and 53 substations in Kadapa zone.

“As per APSECM data, 1100 LED bulbs of 9 watt, 3026 LED tube lights of  20 Watts, 884 BLDC ceiling fans of 35 W, 263 LED Street lights of 70 w, 2441 led street lights of  110 w, 342 flood lights in yards of 190 watts  were successfully retrofitted in place of existing old/conventional lighting system in APTRANSCO substations.  The estimated savings in 70 substations are around 2.58 Million Units per annum worth of Rs.1.87 Cr per annum with investment 1.52 Crore and return on investment in 10 months” JMD said

Speaking on this occasion, special chief secretary K Vijayanand said that the energy is the prime mover of economic growth and an important part of energy security. “Energy efficiency is one of the most powerful tools to achieve the objective of Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to make State as destination for cost effective power. This will help the State in promoting growth, job creation and fulfill energy needs at cost effective basis,” he said.

He further said that the State government is giving utmost priority for energy efficiency measures in power sector which is the implementing department for energy efficiency programs in the State. “Apart form other sectors, the State Govt. aims to implement EE measures in Power sector on saturation basis”, Special CS Said.

JMD TRANSCO explained that apart from energy efficiency measures in EHT substations, APTRANSCO has taken transmission loss reduction measures to reduce losses under 2.8 per cent which is one of the lowest transmission losses in the country. The measures include erection of new HT lines and replacement of old lines, Augmentation & Addition of power transformers in EHT Substations, reactive power management by installing and erection of capacitor bank or reactors. APTRANSCO carries out periodical maintenance of substations and line patrolling effectively to minimize interruptions, he said.

He said that many energy losses occur at substations wherein the equipments at substations dissipate large amounts of energy as heat, especially the large transformers. All that energy must be generated by power plants to compensate. In addition, the substation itself requires energy to operate. Since the substation building must be kept under optimal conditions for occupants, there are also lighting and space heating expenses. APTRANSCO is focusing on Lighting upgrades and smart controls that save more than 80% of the energy compared with an equivalent lighting fixture without controls, JMD said.

He further said APTRANSCO is exploring other energy saving opportunities in substation to have a monitoring system that allows a precise assessment of their effectiveness that includes optimization of heat dissipation in the cooling and pumping equipment associated with substation. APTRANSCO JMD Vigilance & Security B Malla Reddy, APTRANSCO Director Grid, AVK Bhaskar, Director Finance, T Veerabhadra Reddy, Chief Engineers of Zones of Vijayawada, Kadapa and Visakhapatnam and other senior officials have participated
