- The S&L program covers 30 appliances out of which 11 appliances are under the mandatory regime while the remaining 19 appliances are under the voluntary regime
- The S&L program resulted in savings of 65 Billion units of energy during FY19-20.
- BEE is going to organize BEE foundation day on 1st March-2023 in Indian Habitat Centre at New Delhi
In accordance with the Government of India's policy to increase energy efficiency and substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by achieving the country's climate change targets (Panchamrit), the Union Ministry of Power-led Bureau of Energy Efficiency has emphasized the need for all State Designated Agencies to engage deeply in the energy efficiency movement on a mission mode, which will have a major impact on protecting the interests of future generations and the economy.
While interacting with all the State Designated Agencies (SDAs) who have been invited to the 21st foundation day ceremony of BEE, which will be held in a grand manner at the Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi on March 1, 2023, the Director General of BEE, AbhayBakre, urged all the SDAs to expedite energy efficiency activities in order to achieve the National energy savings target of 150 million tonnes of oil equivalent of energy, which is equivalent to 750 billion units of electricity.
DG BEE reported that the union power minister R K Singh and the secretary of power, GoI Alok kumar, have been emphasizing the need for all state governments to consider energy efficiency as a flagship programme and to fully focus on reaching the targets set by GoI for mitigating climate change, to which energy efficiency contributes approximately fifty percent.
He advised proactive States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh etc. to identify the energy saving investment potential in their respective States and focus on energy efficiency related investments that will help the States to boost the economy, improve energy performance in key sectors, create employment and improve the environment.
He requested Special chief Secretary Energy, GoAP and Vice Chairman APSECM, K Vijayanand apart from other State SDAs, to fully focus on finalization of the State Energy Efficiency Action plan for each sector and execute energy efficiency programs at faster pace to achieve the state energy efficiency target of 6.68 million ton of oil equivalent (mtoe) by 2030.
“The BEE has come a long way since its inception and has successfully navigated through the ebbs and flows of pandemic, energy crisis, and unprecedented rise in energy demand, which have only strengthened its determination and resilience. With this year’s foundation day ceremony, the BEE will stay committed to brainstorm, strategize and develop programmes, standards and guidelines to help meet the needs of the future generations, with the support of all the State Designated Agencies,”, said DG BEE.
“It’s a historic journey by BEE for more than two decades towards promoting energy efficiency in the country and the BEE foundation day this year being celebrated on 1st March-2023 holds much more significance as India is hosting the prestigious G20 summit this year which is the premier forum for international cooperation. The G20 members represent around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. It plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues, DG BEE said.
The first G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) Meeting under India’s Presidency which was held in Bengaluru focused on priority areas that include Energy Transition through Addressing Technology Gaps, Low-cost Financing for Energy Transition, Energy Security and Diversified Supply Chains, Energy Efficiency, Industrial Low Carbon Transitions and Responsible Consumption, Fuels for Future (3F) and Universal Access to Clean Energy and Just, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transition Pathways, said DG BEE.
BEE has played influential role to enhance energy efficiency in industrial sector through efficient energy use, energy cost reduction and greenhouse gas emissions reduction through Perform, Achieve & Trade(PAT) and achieved savings of 24.27 million tonnes of oil equivalent(Mtoe) energy worth of Rs 45,000 Crs in first three cycles of PAT with the investment of Rs 70,000 Crore by industries in PAT across the country with a total emission reduction more than 100 million tonnes of CO2, which is 4% of the country’s emissions.
Under the building sector, BEE has been successful in enforcing the Energy Conservation Building Code for commercial buildings which has been notified in 21 states and 2 union territories so far. With the adoption of (ECBC) 2017 for new commercial buildings throughout the country, it is estimated to save around 300 Billion Units by 2030 and reduce peak demand over 15 GW in a year that is equivalent to expenditure savings of Rs 35,000 crore and 250 million tonnes of CO2 reduction.
BEE has been very successful to provide the consumer an informed choice about energy intensive appliances and equipment by introducing standards and labeling program under the appliances sector. The program covers 30 appliances out of which 11 appliances are under the mandatory regime while the remaining 19 appliances are under the voluntary regime. The program resulted in savings of 65 Billion units of electrical energy during FY19-20.
The BEE came into force on March 1st, 2002 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 with a mission to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles with the primary objective of reducing the energy intensity of the Indian economy within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
