Vijayawada, August 11: In a bid to enhance energy efficiency across Southern India, including Andhra Pradesh, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has called upon State Designated Agencies ( SDAs) of all States to intensify their efforts in promoting the Star Labeling appliances under Standards and Labeling (S&L) Programme for electronic appliances. This initiative, aimed at empowering electricity consumers and fostering electricity savings, is seen as a crucial step towards achieving broader energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
As part of meetings with SDAs in Southern States, including SDA of Andhrapradesh State Energy Conservation Mission ( APSECM), the media adviser ( Southern States/ UTs) A Chandra Sekhara Reddy along with CEO, APSECM BAV Kumar Reddy submitted a detailed report of Energy Efficiency including S&L to K Vijayanand Spl CS. AP Energy dept and explained about the impact of S&L in particular.
In this connection, welcoming BEE's appeal during an interaction, K Vijayanand emphasized the State government's unwavering commitment to the energy sector. "Under the leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh prioritizes the provision of 24x7 quality power supply adhering to global standards," he said. He further highlighted the State's focus on Green Energy to meet future demands, underscoring the government's dedication to promoting Energy Efficiency as part of its broader strategy to ensure energy security with environmental consciousness.
"The State government is fully committed to promoting all energy efficiency programmes with the utmost dedication," said Vijayanand. "These efforts are not only beneficial to the State and its power sector but also crucial for electricity consumers, economic development, and environmental improvement," he said. The State will lay more focus on raising public awareness about energy efficiency and conservation through various activities, he said.
In its appeal, the BEE emphasized the significant consumer benefits of using star-labeled electronic appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, electric cookers, and fans etc. The BEE a Statutory Body is implementing a multi-faceted approach that includes equipping State Designated Agencies (SDAs) like APSECM with robust tools for market surveillance to ensure the integrity of labeled products, boost consumer confidence, and strengthen the Star Labeling Programme's implementation.
The Star Labeling Programme has significantly increased consumer awareness of the energy-saving potential of electrical appliances. By assigning 1-5 star ratings, with 5 stars indicating the most efficient models, the programme helps consumers make informed choices. This leads to substantial savings on electricity bills and supports environmental conservation.
Since its inception, the Star Labeling Programme across India has yielded impressive results, leading to substantial electricity savings and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. By 2019, the programme facilitated savings of 109 billion units of electricity and a reduction of 88 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. In the fiscal year 2020-21 alone, it achieved savings of 56 billion units of electricity, translating to over Rs. 30,000 crore in cost savings and a reduction of 46 million tonnes in CO2 emissions.
BEE is urging consumers to opt for star-rated appliances for financial and environmental benefits. The Bureau emphasized the role of SDAs in implementing the program, including appointing inspecting officers, conducting market surveillance, and promoting consumer awareness.
Recognizing proactive efforts in Southern states and Union Territories—Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep—BEE pledged full support to advance energy efficiency. The Bureau stressed sustainable energy practices amid rising domestic energy demands.
BEE's commitment to energy efficiency includes rigorous testing of labeled products in accredited labs and swift action against non-compliance. As the programme evolves, adding more appliances and updating Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), it ensures ongoing energy savings, emission reductions, and reinforces India's dedication to a greener future.
The Star Labeling Programme continues to empower consumers and promote environmental stewardship, leading India towards a more energy-efficient and sustainable future.
