As part of the country’s objective to reduce emissions intensity of its Gross Domestic Product by 45 percent by 2030, from 2005 level and propagate a healthy and sustainable way of living through the mass movement of ‘LIFE’– ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ to combat climate change, the Union Ministry Of Power led Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) advised all State Designated Agencies(SDAs) including Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission(APSECM) to create massive awareness on energy savings theme of LiFE movement that contribute towards the National goals of energy efficiency and protect environment.
The Govt. of India launched Mission LiFE which is envisioned as an India-led global mass movement that will nudge individual and collective action to protect and preserve the environment. Mission LiFE makes the fight against climate change, in which everyone can contribute with their respective capacities. As the people’s lifestyle has a big role in climate change, the LIFE (Lifestyle For Environment) movement aims to push individuals and communities to practice a lifestyle that is synchronous with nature to combat climate change. This mass movement with citizen centric approach was introduced for mindful and deliberate utilization of resources to protect and preserve the environment for which energy efficiency play a pivotal role i.e contributes around 50 per cent for addressing climate change.
The Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) Leena Nandan communicated to Secretary, Ministry of Power Alok Kumar regarding various actionable points of Ministry of Power and BEE under Mission LiFE, out of which creation of awareness about LiFE mission in Energy Clubs established in Schools across all the States/UTs is one of the activity.
Accordingly, the Union Ministry of Power has asked BEE to propagate energy savings concept of LiFE across all the States in co-ordination with SDAs. The BEE communicated to APSECM to organize Mission LiFE event in energy clubs constituted in the Schools in Andhra Pradesh and asked to nominate a nodal officer to implement LiFE awareness activities.
LIFE is designed with the objective to mobilize at least one billion Indians and other global citizens to take individual and collective action for protecting and conserving the environment by 2028. Within India, at least 80 percent of all villages and urban local bodies are aimed to become environment-friendly by 2028.Changing individual and community behavior alone can have a great effect on the environmental and climate crisis.
Disclosing the above during interaction with some section of stakeholders, the Director General of BEE Abhay Bakre who thanked NITI Aayog, Ministry of power and Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for their valuable directions for LiFE movement, emphasized the need to implement the LiFE energy saving actions in their respective States and said that the impact of LiFE actions can be significant. “For instance, switching off the car / scooter engines at traffic lights / railway crossings by 1 billion Indians from 2022-23 to 2027-28, can save up to 22.5 billion kWh of energy” DG BEE said.
The DG emphasized on 19 comprehensive and non-exhaustive list of individual LiFE actions of energy savings out of total 75 actions in 7 Categories. The other 56 actions are included in six categories of water conservation, single use plastic, sustainable food system, swachattha actions, Healthy Lifestyles and E-waste reduction which are specific and measurable, easy to practice by individuals, communities and institutions etc.
He along with Deputy Director General, BEE Ashok kumar, Secretary BEE, Milind Deore participated by Directors of BEE Saurabh Diddhi, Sunil Khandare, Arijitsen Gupta, Vineeta Kanwal, P Samal, Sameer Pandita, S K Verma etc., asked all Stakeholders including SDAs to formulate an action plan to create massive awareness about the significance of energy savings through LiFE movement among the public. BEE advised SDAs to involve general public, various organizations and associations of farmers and industry etc. in the movement of efficient use of energy and resources with pro-environment consciousness which is necessary to protect the interests of the future generations.
He appreciated Andhra Pradesh for its objective/big initiative to involve one crore women of self-help groups (SHGs) and students through energy clubs etc in the energy efficiency activities through Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and education department of Andhra Pradesh. Responding to DG BEE, the APSECM officials explained about the energy conservation awareness activities being performed in the State involving wide variety of stakeholders (Students, SHG Women, Employees, farmers and General Public etc) by conducting awareness on Building, Industrial sector, Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Demand side management, Agriculture sector, Commercial sector etc.
The DG stressed on the need for faster implementation of energy efficiency programs in all the sectors to reduce carbon emissions to reach the climate change and sustainability goals of the country. In view of this, BEE took several crucial steps for enhancing energy efficiency in the country. The steps taken by BEE to save energy in various key sectors like industry alone saved 21.95 Million ton of oil equivalent energy worth of around Rs.40,945 Crs by implementing Perform Achieve Trade(PAT) scheme(cycle-1 & 2). Energy conservation building code (ECBC) is also one of the best programs to promote energy efficiency at ground level, DG said.
Representatives from various State Designated Agencies, BEE officers and other officials have participated in the webinar.
