Vijayawada, 7th January: In a luminous journey towards a greener and more sustainable future, EESL's 9th-anniversary celebration becomes a powerful narrative of transformation in India's energy landscape, marked by milestones like distributing 36.86 crore LED bulbs, achieving a remarkable 90% reduction in prices, and solidifying the UJALA (Unnat Jyothi Affordable LEDs for All) and SLNP (Street Lighting National Program) initiatives as a resounding testament to Energy Efficiency.
Quantifying the Impact - Energy Efficiency Service Ltd (EESL), a JV of PSUs under Union Ministry of Power, proudly announced the distribution of a staggering 36.86 crore LED bulbs, 72.18 lakh tube lights, and 23.59 lakh energy-efficient fans under the UJALA scheme over the past nine years.
This monumental effort translated into an estimated energy savings of a whopping 48.42 billion kWh annually. The ripple effect extends further, with avoided peak demand reaching an impressive 9,789 MW and greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 39.30 million t CO2 per year. Equally impressive are the estimated annual monetary savings of INR 19,334 crore in consumer electricity bills.
Prime Minister's Vision Realized - The journey commenced on 5th January 2015, when the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi, launched the UJALA and SLNP programs. These initiatives aimed to replace conventional street lights with smart and energy-efficient LED lights, setting the stage for a nationwide shift towards sustainable energy practices.

Brushless DC (BLDC) Fans for a Greener Tomorrow - The distribution of 1 crore BLDC fans under UJALA is a strategic move by EESL to reduce CO2 emissions by over 14.85 lakh tones per annum and facilitate energy savings of 225 MW.
Economic Impact - A Remarkable 90% Reduction - The procurement price of LED bulbs witnessed a remarkable 90% reduction, dropping from INR 310 in January 2014 to a highly affordable INR 39.90 by August 2019. Technical specifications also saw enhancements, with LED bulbs now featuring 9 W and an improved luminosity of 100 lumen/W.
Mass Engagement and Recognition - With over 9 crore consumers benefiting from these LED bulbs, the UJALA scheme stands as the largest non-subsidy based LED lighting program globally. The program's inclusivity is further highlighted by its inclusion in the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (GSA) and Extended Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (EGSA), where EESL distributed over 68 lakh LED bulbs across 65,000 villages, reaching low-income households through distribution counters and mobile vans.
CESL's Gram Ujala Scheme - Adding another layer to the success story, (CESL) Convergence Energy Services Limited, a subsidiary of EESL, implemented the innovative Gram Ujala scheme under the Ministry of Power. This initiative aimed at providing rural households with 7 Watt and 12 Watt LED bulbs, backed by a robust 3-year warranty, at an affordable rate of Rs 10 each. The exchange program, where old incandescent lamps were swapped for energy-efficient alternatives, contributed significantly to both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.
During a review meeting, EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor thanked Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) GOI, State governments and Union Territories for being part of this grand success and also appealed to propel the success of UJALA and SLNP initiatives, emphasizing their transformative impact on energy efficiency.
