Ensure Uninterrupted Supply of 1700 Cusecs of Nagarjuna Sagar Water to Zone 3
Protect 2.11 lakh acres of dry crops in Zone 3
Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal Project Committee Chairman, Vice Chairman, and DC Vice Presidents review water release at Ramachandrapuram Regulator (117 km)
Amidst severe water scarcity in the ayacut under Zone 3 of the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal Project Committee, the committee’s Chairman Kota Veerababu, Vice Chairman and AP State Federation of Water Users’ Associations President Alla Venkata Gopalakrishna Rao, along with Visannapeta Circle Superintending Engineer M.R. Mohiuddin and NSP Executive Engineer B. Santosh, inspected the water release at the 117th km regulator in Ramachandrapuram village, Visannapeta Mandal.
After observing that only 800 cusecs of water was flowing, they held a press meet at the Left Canal Circle Office in Visannapeta. Chairman Kota Veerababu highlighted the impact of the bifurcation of the Telugu states on irrigation, stating that out of the 32.25 TMC of Sagar water allocated for Zones 2 and 3 from Telangana, only 11 TMC has been released so far.
He urged authorities to prepare estimates for pending repair works on the canal system, neglected during the past five years of YSRCP governance.
Vice Chairman Alla Venkata Gopalakrishna Rao stressed the need for immediate supply of 1700 cusecs of water to Zone 3, encompassing 2.11 lakh acres in Tiruvuru, Nuzvid, Gannavaram, Denduluru, Mylavaram, and Nandigama constituencies. Farmers in the region have cultivated dry crops such as chili, tobacco, cotton, maize, and pulses.
Despite directions from the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) in December to release 12 TMC of water, only 2 TMC has been supplied so far, with daily releases fluctuating between 600 and 800 cusecs. This has resulted in insufficient water reaching key canals, including the Nuzvid and Mylavaram branch canals, leaving farmers in distress.
The committee plans to send a delegation to meet Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao and Khammam Chief Engineers to advocate for increased water releases. They also called for better coordination among branch canal and distributary committee chairpersons, water user association heads, and NSP officials to prevent water wastage and ensure supply to tail-end areas.
Participants: The inspection and press meet were attended by Distributary Committee Chairpersons of Zone 3, including Devineni Satyanarayana, Raparla Balakrishna, Kapa Rambabu, Inuganti Shobhan Babu, Kolli Venkata Srinivas Reddy, and others. Zone 2 Distributary Committee Chairpersons Gandhra Prasad and Kanuri Hanumantharao, Deputy Executive Engineers K. Ramadasu, V. Seetharamaprabhu, and K. Seetharavamma, water association leaders Janga Chenchureddy and Kavuloori Raja, and other officials also participated.
