A great boon for meeting the rising demand and providing 24x7 qualitative power supply
—K Vijayanand, Special Chief Secretary Energy
—MD APGENCO, KVN Chakradhar babu
In tune with the persistent efforts of the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) to increase coal supply to its thermal power stations on a war footing basis to improve power generation and meet the rising power demand in the State, the Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited (MCL) has accepted to supply 35.48 lakh tonnes of coal per annum to Sri Damodara Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station(SDSTPS), Stage-II, Unit-3(800 MW) as per the Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) with Andhra Pradesh Power Development Corporation Limited(APPDCL).
APGENCO and APPDCL have 5811 MW of thermal and 7989 MW of total installed capacity, for which they have Fuel supply agreement (FSA) for supply of coal from MCL for a quantity of 17.165 MMTPA(Million metric tonne per annum) and from Singareni Coal Colleries limited(SCCL) for a quantity of 6.88 MTTPA. Accordingly, coal is being supplied through All rail route (from MCL & SCCL) to Dr.Narla TataRao Thermal Power Station(NTTPS) & Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (RTPP) and Rail sea Rail mode (from MCL) to SDSTPS & RTPP.
Further, with the continuous monitoring and directions of Chief Minister Y S JaganMohan Reddy and Energy Minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy and special efforts of special chief secretary Energy K Vijayanand and MD GENCO K V N Chakradhar babu under the guidance of the Ministry of Power, GoI, the Coal India Limited /Mahanadi Coalfield Limited has allocated 3.548 MMTPA of coal to Unit#3, 1X800 MW SDSTPS unit and FSA was entered. Recently, the unit commercial operation date (COD) was declared on 10.03.2023. After completion of COD, MCL has issued permission for supply of coal as per FSA to unit#3 with effect from 01.05.2023.
Considering the addition of new unit, APPDCL has started optimum utilization of coal from Adani Kirshnapatnam port to SDSTPS to run the units without interruption. With the permission of supply of additional coal to Unit#3, SDSTPS unit w.e.f 01.05.2023, the supply of coal to the thermal power plants will increase and APGENCO/APPDCL will be able to improve the coal stocks and run the units at their rated capacities to meet the grid demand in this summer.
The subgroup consisting of Ministry of coal (MOC), MOP, Railways, Coal companies are continuously monitoring the coal stocks at all thermal power plants across the country and regulating the coal supplies as per the requirement. As per the co-operation and direction from sub-group, APGENCO and APPDCL plants are able to run the units without interruptions.
While the Managing Director of APGENCO, KVN Chakradhar Babu briefed the above developments to Special Chief Secretary Energy, K Vijayanand in a virtual review meeting on Coal supply to thermal units and its impact on power generation, the special CS said that acceptance from Mahanadi Coal Fields Limited (MCL) to supply 35.48 lakh tonnes of coal per annum to SDSTPS, Stage-II, Unit-3(800 MW) is a great boon for power generation and supply of 24x7 qualitative power supply to consumers. As per the directions of Government, an action plan is in place to supply power to all the sectors without any load reliefs, special CS said.
MD GENCO explained that the daily energy demand has touched its peak at 247 MU on April 20, 2023 with an average demand of 232 MU per day in the month and is expected to reach 250 MU in the coming days. In this critical juncture, the Supercritical Unit-3 of 800MW capacity taken up as Stage-II of SDSTPS which was dedicated to the Nation by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh is in operation since 10.03.2023 and is contributing to the daily average generation of around 16 MU of energy and it came in handy to meet the rising demand of AP state Grid.
Another 1x800 MW Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (Dr NTTPS) is going to be light up within one month and commercial operation date would be after 3 months of light up of the unit. Also, APGENCO is also establishing 12 Hydro Electric units of 80 MW capacities at Polavaram, the first 7 units of which are likely to be commissioned in the FY 2024-25 and the remaining units in FY 2025-26. As part of capacity addition in green energy, it is planned to install 2 additional units of 115 MW each at Lower Sileru and expected to generate the power by July 2024,said MD GENCO.
APGENCO is taking all necessary steps to prevent any problems in power generation including supply of coal from coal fields and also ensuring efficient generation of power at better heat rate and optimization of fuel resources. Efforts are being made to adopt the best practices, improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions. APGENCO will strive hard to be the best organization at national level in power generation and maintaining highest Plant Load Factor (PLF), MD GENCO said.
The Managing Director further said that APGENCO would work keeping in mind the objective of the State government to provide 24X7 quality, reliable and cost effective power supply through optimized power generation.
Directors of APGENCO, Chandrasekhara Raju, Antony Raja, Venkatesulu Reddy and other senior officials have participated.
