Vijayawada, October 20 th 2023 - The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE.GOI) is vigorously spearheading a transformative initiative known as Mission LiFE, striving to instigate a profound shift in citizens' behavior towards fostering an energy-efficient lifestyle and promoting mindful and sustainable consumption patterns to safeguard the environment.
Mission LiFE, launched at COP26 by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi, promotes nature-friendly practices, recognizing participants as "Pro Planet People."
Mobilizing a billion Indians and global citizens, it strives for environmental protection through individual and collective efforts from 2022 to 2028. The mission targets 80% of Indian villages and urban areas adopting eco-friendly practices by 2028. It focuses on urging global individuals towards simple eco-friendly habits, aligning industries with sustainable demands, and influencing large-scale policies for sustainable consumption and production.
While participating as chief guest in BEE--Indo German Energy Program Partnership Summit for all States in Srinagar, the Director General of BEE Abhay Bakre disclosed that Mission LiFE aims to achieve cumulative energy savings of about 500 Mtoe and reduce CO2 emissions by about 2 billion tonnes by 2030.
To achieve this gigantic task BEE is emphasizing all States and proactive States like Andhrapradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, MP, UP, Punjab, Haryana and Bihar etc to take immediate steps to educate the general public and students in particular..
Mission LiFE's initial phase centers on "Change in Demand," emphasizing 75 specific and measurable individual LiFE actions within 7 themes. These actions are easy to adopt for individuals, communities, and institutions, with minimal supply dependencies and no disruption to economic activities. Examples include using LED lights, public transport, and renewable energy sources like solar panels.
BEE has been actively involved in creating awareness and fostering behavioral changes through various activities, including energy clubs in schools, awareness programs for households, and training programs for appliance retailers. As of June 8, 2023, these efforts have reached and influenced a substantial number of participants.
BEE prioritizes improving energy efficiency in the building, transportation, and tourism sectors in response to evolving lifestyles in India.
BEE DG says, "The significance of behavioral change in the general public towards energy efficiency cannot be overstated. It forms the cornerstone of our efforts to mitigate environmental impact and secure a sustainable future. When individuals embrace energy-conscious habits, it not only reduces consumption but also sets a powerful precedent for others to follow. This collective shift is pivotal in shaping a greener, more environmentally responsible society. BEE is dedicated to fostering this change, recognizing that every small action contributes significantly to our broader goal of sustainable energy usage and a healthier planet for generations to come."
Furthermore, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Secretary Milind Deora during the Summit commended the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) MOP. GOI, and the Andhra Pradesh government for their Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) entered during G20 Partnership Summit in GOA to enhance energy efficiency in a massive scale within the housing sector under the Navaratnalu Pedallandariki Illu scheme. This commendable initiative underscores a significant step towards promoting energy-conscious practices in housing. Encouraged by EESL & AP collaboration, BEE has urged other state governments to explore similar initiatives within housing schemes designed for underprivileged communities, thus extending the reach of energy efficiency to the most vulnerable sections of society, says BEE secretary Milind Deore.
Directors of BEE Sourab Didi & Sunil Khandare, Verma,JDs, Abhishekh Sarma,Syam Sunder, Kamran Shaikh explained through power point presentations that BEE had achieved significant energy savings through various schemes, including Standards and Labeling, Energy Conservation Building Code, Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT), and Mission LiFE. These initiatives have led to substantial energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction, and power savings. For instance, the Standards and Labeling scheme has resulted in cumulative energy savings of about 109 billion kWh and avoided generation capacity of over 23,000 MW. The PAT scheme has achieved cumulative energy savings of about 17 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) and avoided generation capacity of over 5,800 MW during the first two cycles.
BEE's Mission LiFE is a significant initiative, aiming to conserve energy and foster profound behavioral change. The attained results indicate a promising shift towards a more energy-efficient and environmentally conscious society
