AP has tremendous scope and potential to promote energy efficiency to address serious challenges faced by the MSME sector

    • TERI estimates energy savings of 500 Million Units (MU) worth of around Rs.300 Crs per annum with at least 10 % energy savings in MSMEs
    • Japan-India technology matchmaking platform (JITMAP) is working towards awareness creation amongst the MSMEs in India-- Director TERI, Girish Sethi
    • TERI plans to seek support from BEE, GoI and other allied departments for imparting Japanese technologies
    • TERI conducted energy efficiency study in major MSME clusters in AP namely Fisheries, Refractory, Foundry, Spinning, dal processing and cold storages
    • Technical support from Japanese companies and research institutions like IGES will be of immense help for sustainable growth of the state
    • Immense potential exists to improve efficiency in MSME by adopting low carbon technologies
    • MSMEs alone consume around 5000 MU per annum out of total energy consumption of 18444 MU in the Industrial sector.
    • APSECM contemplated to identify the energy saving potential and adopt the latest technologies in MSMEs

India’s one of the prominent research organizations, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), is keen to offer Japanese energy-efficient technologies among Micro Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Andhra Pradesh. The Delhi based, TERI is of the view that Andhra Pradesh has tremendous scope and potential to promote energy efficiency to address serious challenges faced by the sector because of dependence on obsolete, low-efficiency technologies that result in wasteful energy consumption and reduce profitability and competitiveness in the MSMEs sector in India thereby controlling emissions also.

TERI is keen to introduce low-carbon technologies in Andhra Pradesh MSMEs with the help of the Japanese government after due consultation and consent from the Union Ministry of Power led Bureau of Energy Efficiency and other concerned ministries.  The TERI working in the fields of energy and environment has strongly focused on MSME sector to promote energy efficiency.

A two day conference on “Building a Resilient De-carbonized Society in India through Environmental Infrastructure and Technology” is being conducted by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) on 12-13 January 2023 at New Delhi in association with IGES (Institute of Global Environmental Strategies), Japan and other Indian as well as Japanese organizations.

During the conference participated by CEO AP State Energy Conservation Mission,    the Senior Director of TERI Girish Sethi said that Japan-India technology matchmaking platform (JITMAP) is working towards awareness creation amongst the MSMEs in India. It focuses on promoting low cost technologies to the user end. There is a need to explore the energy efficient technology basket to include the niche technology and the incorporation of state level policies as smooth transition is expected with the support of state government, he said.

Speaking about MSMEs of AP on this occasion, Girish Sethi said that there is an excellent scope to facilitate the introduction of low carbon technologies from Japan among the MSME sector in Andhra Pradesh. As per the TERI’s report presented to APSECM, Energy dept,  the Energy Consumption in the Industries sector of Andhra Pradesh is around 18,844 MU (as per APERC Tariff order 2022-23) out of which MSMEs alone consumes around 5000 MU per annum as per AP DISCOMs data. “It is estimated that even if 10 percent energy is saved, 500 MU savings could be achieved with estimated monetary savings of Rs.300 Crore  per annum  by implementing energy efficiency measures in a phased manner”, he said.

He said TERI has conducted energy efficiency studies in major MSME clusters in Andhra Pradesh namely Fisheries, Refractory, Foundry, Spinning, dal processing and cold storages and recommended several energy efficiency measures. “As per the study, it is estimated to save electrical energy to the tune of around 65 MU in Sea food processing sector in Bhimavaram and 12 MU in the foundry cluster and thermal energy equivalent to 2400 metric tons of coal in refractory cluster in East Godavari. In all the three clusters, it is expected to reduce around 65000 tonnes of CO2 per annum. TERI is now keen to explore the feasibility of adopting the Japanese energy efficiency technologies in MSMEs of Andhra Pradesh”, Girish Sethi said

“It is desirable for us to make AP a role model in the country in establishing energy efficiency technology based system with the support of JITMAP. With the huge potential, congenial atmosphere, proactive government & officials, exclusive mission/establishment for energy efficiency, the TERI is keen to come forward to establish world class Energy efficiency technology based system in Andhra Pradesh. There is scope to strengthen the industry-academia linkages between the two countries i.e India, Japan through technology collaboration on low carbon technologies. Technical support from Japanese organizations like IGES will be of immense help for overall economic growth.” he said.

Welcoming the good gesture from TERI, CEO APSECM A Chandrasekhara Reddy who read the message of Spl.CS energy, K Vijayanand has profusely thanked Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), MoP for their support in energy efficiency activities particularly in MSMEs and said that the Chief Minister Y S JaganMohan Reddy and Energy Minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy are giving utmost priority for 24x7 quality and reliable power supply for which energy efficiency will play a major role.

“APSECM has implemented innovative IoT based energy efficiency technology project in around 65 MSME units that got special recognition at National level. It is contemplated to identify the energy saving potential and adopt the latest technologies in around 98000 MSMEs in AP with 19 sub sectors of MSMEs comprising of Metal processing units, Food processing units, Fisheries, Foundry, Ceramics, Refractory, Poultry, Spinning, Cold Storages etc. in a phased manner. Demonstration of new cleaner technology along with implementation of pilot projects will boost the economy of MSMEs and employment generation opportunities as well. These technologies and energy efficiency measures in MSMEs shall be discussed with industries department for further course of action” CEO said.

In the context of taking lead by India and Japan for Building a Resilient De-carbonized Society in India through Environmental Infrastructure and Technology, on the eve of global summit today at New Delhi, TERI finally opined that several proactive States in India like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat etc., should take lead for a new momentum for de-carbonization that ultimately helps for addressing climate change.

Satoshi Kojima, Director IGES associated with environment dept, Govt. of Japan, Mr Rajani Ranjan Rashmi, Distinguished fellow TERI and former special secretary (MOEFCC), Prosanto Pal, Associate Director TERI , Representatives from  Environment dept of Japan (MOEJ), Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India (MOEFCC), Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India(JCCII),  Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), executives and delegates from Japan and Indian energy and environment organizations have participated in the conference.
