We should support and encourage students to achieve their goals : CM YS Jagan

    • July 28,2023

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said on Thursday that the students from Andhra Pradesh should gain top positions by obtaining the best education from the world's top-ranking universities.

"We should support and encourage students to achieve their goals," he said while depositing Rs 45.53 crore for 357 students for their studies abroad, at an event held in the CM’s camp office here. This is for the beneficiaries under the Jagananna Videshi Vidya Deevena.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said, "I am of the view that unless our students are supported with financial assistance to pursue higher education in top colleges and universities, they can’t become global leaders. Hence the implementation of this scheme. Our bright students can become CEOs of the top companies around the world."

The Chief Minister said, "This scheme is a boon to meritorious SC, ST, BC, minority and EBC students who want to study abroad but are facing financial difficulties. Under the Videshi Vidya Deevena, being implemented in full transparency, the government would extend financial assistance to all eligible students in saturation method.

Parents of such students should not fall into a debt trap. Hence, the government is handholding all eligible students at every step - from paying their airfare and visa charges to helping them complete their courses in top 50 universities abroad as per the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University and Times Higher Education rankings," he said.

A total expense of upto Rs 1.25 crore to SC, ST, BC and minority students and upto Rs 1crore to EBC students would be reimbursed, the CM said, adding this will help students pursue their studies in 21 faculties across 320 educational institutions abroad.

"One has to pay Rs 1.32 crore for pursuing MBA in the Booth School of Business, Chicago University; Rs 1.02 crore for MS course in University of Manchester; Rs 1.16 crore for MBA in Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University; Rs 1.13 crore for MBA in London Business School and Rs 1.11 crore for MS in Columbia University. The fees vary from Rs 61 lakh to Rs 2.06 crore for pursuing MBA and MS courses in other universities abroad," Jagan Mohan Reddy noted.

The Chief Minister recalled that during the TD rule, the SC, ST, BC and Minority students got only Rs. 15 lakh while EBC students received Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance.  While an annual family income limit of Rs 6 lakh was fixed for the beneficiaries during the TD rule, it has been enhanced to Rs 8 lakh by the present government to cover more number of students.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said the government pays the first installment after receiving immigration card (I-94), the second installment at the end of first semester, the third installment after the second semester results and the final installment after successful completion of fourth semester.
