Hyderabad, March.14: In a significant push towards a greener future, the Telangana government is taking decisive steps to make the building sector more energy-efficient by effectively implementing the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) under the purview of Municipal Administration and Urban Development. This ambitious vision not only fosters environmental consciousness but also promises immense benefits for the general public and the state government.

Telangana: A Frontrunner in Energy Efficiency - The state has now emerged as a frontrunner in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI), a national benchmark established by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) GOI. Notably, Telangana is expected to achieve a remarkable feat by ensuring 100% compliance with the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for new constructions, setting a strong example for the entire country.

Beyond Buildings: A Multi-Pronged Approach - The state's commitment goes beyond just buildings. The Telangana State Designated Agency (SDA), TS REDCO, has joined hands with the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) department to ensure all new government buildings adhere to self-sustainability and energy-efficient practices. This initiative is projected to yield significant savings, with an estimated reduction of 1.4 million units of electricity and 1,200 tons of CO2 emissions. Recognizing the crucial role of electric mobility, the MA&UD department is actively planning large-scale promotion of electric vehicles.

Chief Minister's Vision for a Sustainable Metropolis - Principal Secretary for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), M. Dana Kishore, stated that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the department and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to formulate a Pro-people's Policy and comprehensive action plan. This plan aims to transform Hyderabad into the world's most energy-efficient cosmopolitan city by adopting cutting-edge global technologies. The Chief Minister envisions Hyderabad not just as the best in India, but as a leading example on the global stage. The substantial investments in energy efficiency will not only attract investors seeking higher returns due to reduced operational costs but also position Hyderabad as a forerunner in environmental responsibility.

Principal Secretary said that the Chief Minister acknowledges the importance of environmentally friendly development, recognizing its numerous advantages for society, encompassing the environment, the economy, and overall well-being. A key aspect of this vision is the planned rejuvenation of the Musi River ecosystem. This initiative, along with the development of the riverfront, aims to foster economic growth and enhance the city's socio-economic landscape. A clean Musi River would make Hyderabad a unique and thriving metropolis in the world. The Principal Secretary released a poster on Mission LIFE (Lifestyle for Environment) in Hyderabad (developed by the Wing of Media Advisor BEE) along with BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) GOI and TS REDCO officials, further emphasizing that Hyderabad, with its diverse industries and rapidly growing presence of major global companies, presents a unique opportunity for showcasing the synergy between economic development and environmental responsibility.

As part of its endeavor to inspire individuals and explain to top executives of the public sector initially to contribute to BEE's climate goals in the area of energy efficiency, in coordination with TS Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TS REDCO), Media Advisor (Southern States/UTs), BEE GOI, held discussions on the impact of Mission Life with M. Dana Kishore, Principal Secretary MA&UD, Govt. of Telangana. The Principal Secretary thanked BEE for taking up stringent steps to implement ECBC and Super ECBC programs in MA & UD for economic advantages. ECBC compliance reduces energy consumption, lessening reliance on fossil fuels and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. This results in lower operational costs and increased property value. Furthermore, ECBC prioritizes occupant comfort, resource conservation, and innovation. Notably, ECBC-compliant buildings achieve significant energy savings, with ECBC+ and Super ECBC buildings leading the forefront. ECBC compliance leads to buildings that are 20-45% more efficient than conventional ones. The ECBC plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability, benefiting the environment, economy, and building occupants.

A Hub for Sustainable Growth - The Secretary of BEE, Milind Deora, along with directors of BEE Saurabh Didi , SK Varna, Abhishek Sharma  highlighted that apart from major Cities in the Country, Hyderabad, a rapidly growing industrial and business hub, stands to gain significantly by embracing energy-efficient practices. Energy-efficient technologies not only translate into lower operational costs but also boost the economy, making Hyderabad a more attractive destination for investors.
