Hyderabad: Minister K.T. Rama Rao on Friday met Union defence minister Rajnath Singh and sought defence land parcels in different areas for the construction of flyovers, skywalks, link roads and road widening in Hyderabad to ease traffic congestion.

He submitted representations to the defence minister reiterating the demand for early transfer of defence land for road development projects in and around Hyderabad. He also urged Singh to expedite the excision of civil areas in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and its merger with the GHMC.
The defence land parcels that the government is seeking are for a skywalk at Mehdipatnam, elevated corridor on Rajiv Rahadari, elevated corridor from Paradise junction to ORR junction near Kandlakoya on NH-44, link roads under Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL) project and certain road widening works.

Rao said that HMDA undertook the construction of a skywalk at Rythu Bazaar in Mehdipatnam, as part of the city's road network and pedestrian movement improvement project. For this, the government needed 0.51 acre of defence land.

He said the elevated corridor from Paradise junction (near Gymkhana Ground) to ORR junction on the Hyderabad-Karimnagar-Ramagundam highway passes through West Marredpally, Karkhana, Trimulgherry, Bolaram, Alwal, Hakimpet and Thumkunta, and ends at the junction with the ORR at Shamirpet. It covers a length of 18.40 kilometers while the exit and entry ramps are planned at Trimulgherry junction (two ramps) and Alwal.

He also mentioned the government’s proposal to build an elevated corridor from Paradise junction to ORR junction near Kandlakoya on National Highway-44. The proposed route passes through Secunderabad, Tadbund junction, Bowenpally junction, Suchitra, Kompally and Kandlakoya, and ends at the ORR junction near Medchal.

The minister sought transfer of small portions of defence land for the creation of link roads and road widening. The road widening works were proposed at locations like Kanchanbagh, the junction of Road No.1 and 12 at Banjara Hills, from Zohra Bee dargah to Rakshapuram, from Mohammadi lane to Andhra flour mill road and from Andhra flour mill to Tippu Khan bridge.

MPs Kotha Prabhakar Reddy and G. Ranjith Reddy, TS Planning Board vice-chairman B. Vinod Kumar and special chief secretary of MA&UD Arvind Kumar were also present in the meeting.
