Ayurveda doctors permitted to perform surgeries in Andhra Pradesh
State to allow 58 types of surgical procedures under approved guidelines.
Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav welcomes policy integration.
Amaravati | December 23, 2025: The Government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to integrate ancient Indian medical practices with modern healthcare systems by permitting qualified Ayurveda doctors to independently perform surgeries.
Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav approved the move, allowing Ayurveda doctors who have completed Post Graduation with specialized surgical training to conduct surgeries in accordance with the Indian Medicine Central Council Regulations, 2020, and guidelines issued by the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM).
Under the new policy, Ayurveda practitioners will be allowed to perform 58 surgeries, including: • 39 procedures under Shalyatantra (General Surgery)
* 19 procedures under Shalakya Tantra (ENT & Ophthalmology)
These include treatment of infectious conditions requiring surgical intervention, removal of damaged tissue, wound management and suturing, treatment of piles and fissures, removal of cysts and tumours, muscle and tissue repair, and skin grafting.
The Minister held a detailed review with AYUSH Director K. Dinesh Kumar and senior officials regarding implementation modalities. Vijayawada Government Ayurveda College and two private colleges offering PG courses were discussed. The Minister directed officials to immediately introduce Shalyatantra and Shalakya Tantra PG programmes at Vijayawada Government Ayurveda College and upgrade infrastructure with modern operation theatres and equipment.
Yadav expressed happiness that Ayurveda surgeons will now fully utilize India’s 2,500-year-old surgical heritage, stating that this decision will effectively blend traditional Indian medical knowledge with modern healthcare practices.
He noted that although the policy framework was issued by the Central Government in 2000, no follow-up action was taken earlier, reflecting past neglect towards AYUSH services.
The decision is expected to significantly strengthen Ayurveda-based surgical care in the state
