Hyderabad, 10th March: As part of its sustained efforts to aggressively promote energy efficient star labeling appliances programme at National level, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Union Ministry of Power, is taking a multi-pronged approach, including focusing on market surveillance to strengthen the implementation of the successful Star Labeling Programme for appliances across the country. The initiative aims to empower consumers, promote energy conservation, and contribute to environmental well-being.

Focus on Market Surveillance and Consumer Awareness - BEE is equipping State Designated Agencies (SDAs) with the necessary tools for robust market surveillance. This will ensure the integrity of labelled products and build consumer confidence in the program.  Workshops like the one planned for SDAs of Southern States in Kochi, Kerala from March 14-15 will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.

Star Label: A Hallmark of Energy Efficiency - Launched in 2006, the Star Labeling Programme has been a game-changer. It educates consumers about the energy-saving potential of electrical appliances and equipment. The program assigns a star rating (1-5 stars) based on energy efficiency, with 5 stars signifying the most efficient models.  This empowers consumers to make informed choices that not only save money on electricity bills but also benefit the environment.

Program's Measurable Success - According to the Wing of Media Advisor (Southern States) the Director General BEE Abhay Bakre reviewed with Dy.DG. Asok Kumar, Secretary Milind Deora, Directors, Sourab Didi, Sunil Khandare, AS. Gupta, Sameer Pandit, SK.Varma, Samal, Abhishek Sharma on the occasion upcoming workshop and said that since its inception, the programme has yielded remarkable results. It has led to substantial savings of 109 billion units of electricity and a reduction of 88 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2019.  The program's impact continues to grow – in 2020-21 alone, it facilitated savings of 56 billion units of electricity, translating to a cost saving of over Rs. 30,000 crore and a CO2 emission reduction of 46 million tonnes.

BEE's Call to Consumers and State Designated Agencies (SDAs) - BEE urges all categories of consumers to make a conscious choice by opting for star-rated appliances. This will not only save them money but also contribute to environmental protection. The Bureau has also emphasized the crucial role of SDAs in program implementation.  BEE Director General hrole played by states like, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka and UTs such as A&N, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep in South called upon SDAs to be the vanguards of change by appointing inspecting officers, conducting market surveillance, and promoting consumer awareness.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future - BEE acknowledges the proactiveromoting energy efficiency effectively. The Bureau has pledged its full support to all states and UTs, recognizing the importance of sustainable energy practices, particularly in the face of rising domestic energy demands.

Looking Ahead: Vigilance and Expansion - BEE meticulously tests labelled products in accredited laboratories and takes swift action against non-compliance. The program is constantly evolving to encompass more appliances and undergo periodic revisions of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). This ensures continued energy savings, emission reduction, and reinforces India's commitment to a greener future
