Amaravati:Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu today released the Cancer Screening Atlas along with eminent cancer specialist and Advisor for government Dr. Nori Dattatreya.
The Atlas has been compiled using data recorded from cancer screening tests conducted in the initial phase on 29 million (2.9 crore) people across the state. Through a Vision Statement, the government aims to provide advanced cancer treatment by 2030 and through a Mission  it seeks to reduce the number of cancer patients through early screening tests, with the Atlas serving as the basis for this action plan.
The Cancer Care Strategy outlined in the Atlas focuses on health education, public awareness about cancer, prevention, screening, and early detection. Based on data collected from both men and women across all districts in the state, the Atlas includes detailed information on treatment modalities such as surgical, radiation, and medical therapies.
The Atlas has been designed to identify the number and types of cancer patients in different regions across all 28 districts of the state, enabling localized treatment and planning.
Dr. Nori Dattatreya stated that Andhra Pradesh currently has 32,657 cancer patients and according to estimates by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer cases are expected to increase by 20 percent by 2030.
He clarified that this is the first time in the country that a Cancer Atlas has been developed at the state level in Andhra Pradesh. He added that by mapping patients, there is scope to provide day-care chemotherapy and palliative care services through 23 teaching hospitals and district hospitals.
The Chief Minister suggested seeking support from various organizations and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to provide HPV vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer among women. He noted that extensive awareness campaigns undertaken by the state government have increased public awareness about cancer and that more people are coming forward to undergo preventive screening tests.
