Etikoppaka Craft Shines at Republic Day Parade: Andhra Pradesh's Cultural Pride

The Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi witnessed a grand display of Andhra Pradesh's rich cultural heritage, with an elegant tableau featuring Etikoppaka wooden toys. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu expressed immense pride, stating that the intricate craftsmanship of the Etikoppaka tableau captivated everyone, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister highlighted the efforts of the artisans and congratulated all involved in the creation of this masterpiece.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also lauded the display, terming it a proud moment for the state. The tableau, showcased during the parade at Kartavya Path after President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag, reflected the essence of Andhra Pradesh’s artistry. Pawan Kalyan emphasized that the government, under Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, has consistently promoted Etikoppaka toys, which symbolize Andhra Pradesh’s creative spirit and eco-friendly traditions.

"Since the NDA coalition took office, Etikoppaka toys have been included as mementos for dignitaries visiting the state," he stated, further adding that the dedication of the artisans had already been recognized with two prestigious national awards. The Republic Day tableau, he said, was a testament to the government’s commitment to preserving this age-old craft.

Etikoppaka Bommalu: A Timeless Legacy of Andhra Pradesh

Etikoppaka Bommalu, the exquisite eco-friendly wooden toys, represent a 400-year-old tradition of craftsmanship. These toys are renowned for their gentle contours, vibrant colors, and intricate artistry. Crafted using softwood from the Ankudu tree (Wrightia Tinctoria) and colored with natural dyes derived from plants, Etikoppaka toys are celebrated for their safety, beauty, and cultural significance.

This art form traces its roots to the village of Nakkapalli in the 1800s, later flourishing in Etikoppaka, a serene village on the banks of the Varaha River in the erstwhile Visakhapatnam district. The "turned wood lacquer craft" technique, where natural resin is blended with dyes, gives these toys their eco-friendly charm and vivid hues.

In 2017, the toys were awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, authenticating their traditional craftsmanship and elevating their status as cultural treasures. The toys have since gained global acclaim, admired for their artistry and sustainability.

Preserving a Rich Cultural Heritage

Etikoppaka toys are more than just playthings; they embody Andhra Pradesh's rich cultural legacy. From mythological figurines to intricate household items, these handcrafted toys bring stories to life, inspiring both children and adults. Their non-toxic nature and timeless artistry have earned them a cherished place in homes worldwide, symbolizing the harmonious blend of tradition, imagination, and sustainability.
