Farmers Advised to Plan Ahead Amid Possible El Niño Impact: ANGRAU Vice-Chancellor

Vijayawada, March 9:
Farmers should prepare in advance for agricultural activities in view of global climatic changes and possible El Niño conditions in 2026, said Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) Vice-Chancellor Dr. R. Sharada Jayalakshmi.

In a statement issued on Monday, she said that ENSO conditions are likely to remain in a neutral state from February to April this year. At present, the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is also in a neutral phase.

International forecasts indicate that weather conditions are likely to remain normal during the upcoming summer and the southwest monsoon season (June–August 2026), with about 56% probability. However, scientists have warned that El Niño conditions may redevelop in the second half of 2026, with a probability of around 60%.

Dr. Sharada Jayalakshmi noted that such climatic variations could influence the pattern of the southwest monsoon in India. Since rainfall patterns may impact rainfed agriculture, farmers should take necessary precautionary measures.

She advised farmers to closely follow updates and advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Agriculture Department. Farmers should also seek guidance from local agricultural centres and choose crops based on prevailing weather conditions.

The Vice-Chancellor further suggested adopting scientific farming methods and efficient water management practices to withstand climate uncertainties. She emphasised that farmers should remain alert and follow expert guidance to tackle potential agricultural challenges and minimise crop losses
