Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government is set to organize sports competitions for MLAs and MLCs from March 18 at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada. Chief Whip G.V. Anjaneyulu announced this during a press conference held at the stadium's tennis court on Sunday after inspecting the sports facilities.

Expressing his concern over the neglect of legislative traditions during the previous government’s tenure, he emphasized that such events were once a regular practice. He praised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Speaker Chintakayala Ayyannapatrudu for reinstating this tradition, calling it a commendable decision.

Sports for Physical and Mental Well-being

“Sports provide a much-needed break from the stresses of a busy life,” Anjaneyulu stated, adding that the state government is committed to developing stadiums in every constituency. He further highlighted the government’s focus on promoting tourism and sports, aiming to nurture Olympic-level talent.

Competition Details

The competitions will take place on March 18 and 19 from 3 PM onwards at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium, featuring 12 different sports, including cricket, tennis, Tennikoit, throwball, badminton, kabaddi, volleyball, 100-meter sprint, tug-of-war, and table tennis. On March 20, a budget dinner will be hosted at Haritha Berm Park, followed by a prize distribution ceremony for the winners and cultural performances.

Inclusive Participation Across Party Lines

Stressing the event’s bipartisan nature, Anjaneyulu stated, “All MLAs and MLCs have been invited, regardless of party affiliation, and we hope for enthusiastic participation from all.” He also criticized the previous government for neglecting sports and tourism but affirmed that the coalition government is prioritizing them, with a vision of securing an Olympic gold medal for the state.

Opposition Members Should Utilize Assembly Sessions – Yarlagadda Venkat Rao

AP Government Whip Yarlagadda Venkat Rao recalled that such sports competitions were a tradition a decade ago and applauded CM Chandrababu Naidu for reviving them. Addressing the opposition, he remarked, “Instead of just demanding privileges and microphone access, they should attend Assembly sessions and raise constituency issues for resolution.”

Attendees at the Meeting

The meeting was attended by APLA Secretary Prasanna Kumar, TDP Legislature Party in-charge Koneru Suresh, Staff AO Ramavath Venkata Ramana Naik, and other officials.
