Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone with King Charles III of the United Kingdom. This was the Prime Minister's first chat with His Majesty since taking over as Sovereign of the United Kingdom. The prime minister expressed his warmest wishes to the King for a prosperous reign.
"It was a pleasure to speak with His Majesty King Charles III on issues of mutual interest, including environmental protection, climate resilience, and the Commonwealth. Also discussed the priorities of India's G20 Presidency, and the potential of Mission LiFE," PM Modi wrote in a tweet.
During the conversation, a number of topics of common importance to both countries were discussed, including climate action, biodiversity conservation, and new strategies for financing the energy transition. The prime minister thanked His Majesty for his ongoing interest and advocacy on these subjects.
PM Modi also addressed King Charles on India's priorities for its G20 presidency, including the dissemination of digital public goods, and elaborated on the significance of Mission LIFE - Lifestyle for Environment, through which India wants to promote environmentally friendly lifestyles. The leaders discussed the Commonwealth of Nations and how to improve its functioning. They also praised the Indian population in the UK for serving as a "living bridge" between the two countries.
Following his mother, Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022, King Charles III recently ascended the throne.
